    • Concert: Parlor Entertainment
      Sun 7 Jun 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
      555 Edgecombe Ave., Apt. 3F

Art’s power to make an emotional connection is on display every Sunday afternoon in apartment 3F of 555 Edgecombe Avenue. That’s where, for the past 16 years, Marjorie Eliot has staged a jazz concert in her apartment and welcomed the public to attend.

Parlor Jazz keeps alive the jazz tradition. Young lions hoping to test their chops share the stage with veteran musicians. The audience squeezes into the living room, kitchen and hallway on folding chairs.

For Eliot the Sundays are a tribute to the jazz greats whose numbers are dwindling and to her two deceased sons. It was Phillip’s death in 1992 that prompted her to begin the intimate sessions. Eliot, an accomplished professional actress and musician, starts every session with a spiritual on solo piano. Then other musicians, often led by her son Rudel on piano, take over. The result is the small miracle of live music performed up close and personal.

For her long dedication to the performing arts, and for transforming her grief into a beautiful artistic statement shared every week, NoMAA is proud to honor Marjorie Eliot.

    • Concert: Parlor Entertainment
      Sun 21 Jun 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

It was at the Berklee School of Music that his formal jazz training began. Zenón went on to attend Manhattan School of Music and received a Masters in Saxophone Performance.

In 2008 Zenón received a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Later that year he was one of 25 distinguished individuals chosen to receive the MacArthur “Genius” Grant. The fellowship is a prestigious addition in Zenón’s fast-rising career fusing jazz with various forms of music from Puerto Rico, like bomba and jibaro. To date, he has four albums of his own and has appeared as a sideman in more than 15 others.

NoMAA is thrilled to honor Miguel Zenón for his amazing accomplishments and invites you to two free neighborhood performances in celebration of the Uptown Arts Stroll 2009.
